We burned through the birthday boys list yesterday.
Go eat donuts......
Check.
Come back home and open presents......
Check.
Go bowling.......
Check
Go eat hamburger and fries......
Check.
Go to FC Dallas soccer game (check out the cute girl walking next to my son).....
Check.
Everyone bailed on the game except me and my girlfriend which was fine because the little guys were tired from our trip and it was a little cold and windy at the game.
Even though Dallas got beat 3-0 and it was way different than the soccer we are used to,
we couldn't wipe the smile off of Garrett's face as he talked about how much fun he had.
He had a good day.
Oh yeah, I left out number one on his list. Working out together.
Well, you can't get everything you ask for you.

15
Today our oldest son turns 15.
The 15th birthday is a big deal in South America. We wish we could have done something with his buds back at home today but God planned for us to be in Dallas, Texas on this special day.
Garrett has always been super laid back in just about every aspect of his life (except being late for soccer practice or an Inter game.....then he turns into Rain Man) and he's been like that about this birthday. I think we've been more worked up about him not getting to celebrate with his best friends than he's been. He's understood the mad rush that we had to do to get everything ready for our trip to the states and took it all in stride.
Anyway, we continue our tradition of allowing the birthday child to pick the day's activities. Here is what he has come up with so far for today:
1) Work out with me. (He wants to get stronger for soccer and I told him my PT background has been dormant long enough. We'll work out together on this furlough and he wanted to start today.)
2) Go eat doughnuts. (Always important to refuel with good/healthy food after a tough workout)
3) Come back and open presents.
4) Go bowling. (Not much bowling going on in Brasil. It exists but if we went to those places we would pay a fortune.)
5) Go eat a good hamburger, fries and milkshake. (More important refueling after stated workout.)
6) Go to the FC Dallas (professional soccer team) game tonight. (We love soccer.)
Jennifer, our friend in whose house we are staying this week, gave us good places to go for all the above.
So being in a super cool big city has helped to ease the pain of not being home with his buds. Especially when you can find tons of junk food to eat that we don't have in Brasil. I mean, come on, he is 15.
As is our tradition on special days we allow the family to share some stuff about the birthday person:
Giovanni (translated by his mom): " Garrett, thanks for taking care of me and especially for playing with me. I LOVE to play cars with you. You are an awesome big brother. I wuv you."
Anderson: "He is a Colorado doente. He plays soccer VERY good. He is younger than he looks. Sometimes he loses his kooks (mind). He's a very nice brother but sometimes he bugs me but he's still important to me no matter what."
Carys: "He is so cool and awesome. I love to play and wrestle with him."
Ansley: "I miss you Garrett and I know you are having tons of fun!! Eat a couple of donuts for me!! By the way... I am still taller than you. happy birthday!!
Bronwyn: "Happy birthday Garrett! I hope you have a really cool day. I wish I was there with you, but I'm so excited to see you in a few days. I love you, and maybe someday you can take me down. Maybe."
Girlfriend: "Garrett, I could not ask for a better son than you. I love you so much and am so proud of you in every way. I know that God is going to bless you and that you will be a great example for a lot of people in your life. And.... you give the BEST foot massages in the world (come to think of it.... isn't it getting about time for another one of those???) "
Me: "I remember going to the hospital for your birth and wanting another girl. From the day we got married mom and I always wanted lots of kids. Before you, all I knew were girls and I loved it. I remember, after Bronwyn and Ansley were born, only wanting 2-3 more girls.....and then you showed up. All Boy!! My little chubby baby who loved to put on the Batman cape and run around buck naked in the house. My sports buddy who likes any kind of sports (to watch and play). My army guy "set up" man. My wrestling buddy (even though you still CAN NOT take me down). My "want to read everything all the time on the internet about Inter" soul mate. My man that does all the "guy stuff" with me. I still love having girls and always will but God showed me, through you, how much more stuff he had planned for me through having boys and girls. I love that we do all the guy stuff together but there are things about you that are way more important than those things. You are almost as big as me now and have become my co-protector of the girls in our house. You protect your mom and sisters and I love that. I love your laid backness. That quality will serve you well in life. I love that you've always been compassionate and felt for those in need. I love that you've taught me way more about the importance of persistent and consistent prayer than I could ever have taught you. You have been my prayer role model. Thank you! Our family is very blessed to have you in it. I'm glad God gave me boys and that you are the example to the other little men in our house."

Futebol
We've shared before that Garrett wants to be a professional soccer player. He has (and we and other brothers and sisters have as well) been praying for this since he was 6-7.
He LOVES soccer but we've also talked to him about the importance of being a Christian soccer player. To be an example on and off the field.
This week he took an 18 hour bus ride with his team to the state of São Paulo. He went to the city of Angatuba (google map it if you are bored) to play in a big tournament.
He called yesterday and said they got beat 3-0 yesterday. They have another game today. We believe the outcome will be different but even if it isn't we know that Garrett's head is screwed on straight.
How do we know this?
Last week his coach came over to me, during practice, to tell me more about the trip. He told me that he was going to be a father to the boys and he would make sure that the boys behaved. I told him that if Garrett gave him any trouble then he could feel free to discipline him.
About this time the other coach heard the conversation, came over and joined in. He then began to tell me what kind of example that Garrett is to the team. He is a quiet leader. If you know Garrett then you know he isn't a big talker like others in our family (me, Ansley, Anderson). He never has been loud or liked to talk a bunch. So the quiet part wasn't anything unexpected but I was curious to hear about the leader part.
The coach began to tell me that most boys his age are loud and, if one is a leader, then they try to lead the group into trouble. He told me that he has never had a problem with Garrett but rather the other boys look to him to lead. What he does, or doesn't do, leads the group. The coach told me that the other boys look to him to set the tone and that Garrett always leads with a good example.
He plays the game the way he has always been. He doesn't yell, scream or cuss but he quietly leads by his example. He is getting better every day. Ever since the tournament in January his confidence has soared. He now is the starting attacker (forward in english?) in a group that has 30+ players but you never hear him brag. He is a humble player.
Don't get me wrong he is a boy and he is a teenager. He still prefers to play sports than study and he recently received a one day school suspension for blowing up some fireworks at school (I admit that I smiled before my girlfriend laid down the punishment).
He's a boy and we have to deal with what that means from time to time but he is a good kid and it really made us proud to hear his coaches praise his Christian attitude on and off the field.
I brought him home that night and then called him and my girlfriend into the kitchen to tell him what his coaches had said.
In typical form he didn't say much. In fact I don't remember him saying anything. He just had a small grin when I finished.
The sports world definitely needs a Christian soccer player.
Feel free to join us in praying for him to be one of them and please pray for his safety as he returns home this week.

Busy Weekend-Part 6
Warning: LOTS of pictures of somebody else's kid on this blog. If you aren't a grandparent of this child you might be extremely bored. You've been warned.
Have you ever witnessed one of those moments in your child's life when you literally saw the light bulb go off in their head and the confidence just grew like crazy?
Maybe it was studying and getting a good grade and believing, really believing that he/she was as smart as you were telling them.
Maybe it was playing a musical instrument and really believing they could do something special after years of telling them of the gift they have from God.
Maybe it's sports. Maybe God made them to be an athlete and they excel on the field, track, court, etc.
My girlfriend and I were blessed to witness a moment like that with Garrett in January.
Ever since he was six or seven he's been praying and asking God to be a professional soccer player. Not an unusual request for 99% of boys that grow up in Brasil.
He's been persistent about the request. Other people have been praying for that as well.
The world's most popular sport definitely could use a strong Christian role model.
Garrett has played soccer every year since we've lived here. Another "not unusual" thing for 99% of the boys in Brasil.
He has talent, but it always seemed that his confidence level kept him from being what God made him to be. Garrett has a tender heart and thinks of others. Being aggressive on the field was tough for him naturally because of how God made him.
That all changed in January.
He played in a 3 day soccer tournament in a town about 3 hours away from our city.
My girlfriend and I, along with Anderson and Giovanni, decided to drive up one day to watch a game. Garrett had been calling us after his games to let us know how they were doing.
We had one last chance to see him play before they were possibly knocked out of the tournament. They had to win the game we were going to see to continue.
The place was very rural.
Here was the field.
It was a beautiful place with vineyards in the background as well as cows.
Here were our seats during the game.
We got there just in time for kick off but Garrett wasn't playing. He had started every game as an attacker (forward in the U.S.?) but wasn't starting this game. We thought maybe the coach was giving everyone a chance to play.
We found out later that his stomach was bothering him after he ate breakfast. So he didn't start. He didn't think he was going to play at all.
His team was losing 1-0 and not playing well.
There was about 5 minutes left in the game and we saw him get up and talk to the coach.
He entered the game and about 1 minute later he was fouled.
The foul set up the free kick. Notice the the foot hitting the ball on the bottom left of the picture.
The goalie stopped the free kick but didn't hold on to the ball.
Garrett (number 7) came across from the other side of the field.....
......and knocked in the rebound for the tying goal.....
......followed by the celebration.
His mom tends to get a little loud during her kids' games. Especially when they do something good. She's fluent in Portuguese but the yelling always comes out in English. Completely embarrasses Garrett. So the faster we can wave and acknowledge mom the quicker she will stop yelling.
About a minute later he kicked again and hit the post.
Note the agony of his face.
About 2 minutes later another guy on his team hit the winning goal and they/we celebrated.
When the game was over the team mobbed Garrett.
The team then prayed together.....
......and as he walked off the field he heard the call from one of his biggest fans and he came over to talk to him.
I love this picture because you can see in Anderson's eyes how awesome he thinks his big brother is.
As he came off the field the rest of the team started yelling "Norte Americano" which means "North American." There aren't many North Americans that play soccer here.
Before we left the coach came and spoke with us. He told us Garrett wasn't feeling well at all and said he couldn't play at all but the coach said that when he saw us he changed his mind and decided to give it a try. We, and he, are glad he did.
Garrett, as is his humble nature, just kind of shrugged and got kind of embarrassed by all the attention.
We went back home that day and the next day I got a call from Garrett. He was crying in a way that I haven't heard in a long time. He was devastated because his team was beaten in the penalties of the quarter final game.
I called him back a few minutes later. The sadness had passed and we were able to talk about how well his team did. No one expected them to do much and they finished in 6th place out of 51 teams. One thing I like about Garrett's nature is that he doesn't hold on to stuff for a long time. He loves soccer, wants to be a pro but it doesn't consume his being.
He came home that day and was a different person on the field. A more confident person.
Why do I share this? Why do I share something that happened 4 months ago if I am still sharing about last weekend?
He went out of town again, last weekend, with his team to a beach town a couple hours away from here. Another championship.
They won 3 games and won the championship against teams from different cities.
They won their 3 games by a combined score of 21-1. Garrett only played the first game and 10 minutes of the second before hurting his foot and wasn't able to play anymore.
In that one game and 10 minutes he scored 5 goals. He was the leading scorer of the entire tournament.
He shared with us but didn't brag. He was more happy that his team won the championship.
I can't explain the difference in his confidence level compared to January but I like that how the team does is still more important than how he individually does.
When the Spirit moves you to pray for our son, we would appreciate you joining us in prayer for him to be a professional some day.
Like we said, the sports world needs more strong, Christian men to lead it.
And the busy weekend continues.
